Catalogue shape matters more than catalogue size. Products with sizes, colours, bundles or made-to-order options need more careful data modelling than a flat list. A jewellery shop with weight-based pricing, or a D2C brand selling subscriptions, will spend more on product logic than on page design.
Checkout is the second driver. A single payment provider with flat shipping is straightforward. Cash on delivery rules, pin code serviceability, multiple couriers, GST invoices and partial refunds each add build and testing effort. Integrations with inventory, accounting or an ERP sit on the far end and are scoped as separate, named items rather than folded into a vague total.
